Julian Brazier (JB) talks to ABG...
- JB indicated that the Public Sector was getting smaller
- Small businesses ‘will be’ the ‘Hub of recovery within the next 2 years
- JB indicated that Europe will still go downhill. The USA have turned the corner. Holland is the biggest Euro Investor. However, Australia now out of recession
- Debt recovery is difficult – Spain - is 6% in deficit (run away borrowing). Italy – No growth at all. France is in for a rough ride (JB words) 50% of all our exports go to Europe
- Geoff Houghton – indicated that there should be a Rail Service to the Manston Area – linked with a bigger airport, and not the ‘Boris Island’ that the Mayor of London was promoting. JB suggested that reducing the train travel time to London from any receiving airport would be a priority (say 1hr) which is why Manston is not viable at the present time but is hopefull that the high speed rail service that we have can be extended to the area
- JB mentioned – Loss of Sea France and the impact of job losses to the area, A Regional Growth Fund for East Kent is in place and how the Pfizer’s site in sandwich has been dedicated as an enterprise Zone which will potentially benefit new business attracted to the area with 50% start up discounts- (through appraisal panel) and the new launch of the latest government backed Apprenticeship scheme
- We also had a decent question and answer session where JB was happy to answer questions on a more local scale things like the new off ramp at Wincheap for the A2, the status of Canterbury hospital accident and emergency unit, and that small business and networking groups like ours were the real key to get the country back on its feet and ready to make a sustainable future.
