Playing the Generation Game – Getting the Best Out of Gen Z at Work

  • Playing the Generation Game - Getting the Best Out of Gen Z at Work

On 2nd December 2025, our networking group enjoyed an inspiring session with Henry Rose Lee, a leading expert on intergenerational dynamics. Henry shared practical insights on how small businesses can thrive by understanding and embracing the unique qualities of Generation Z. Henry is an engaging and witty speaker, who very luckily lives locally and was kind enough to offer to engage with our members who have all been reviewing their generational interactions, from a customer contact perspective, through to recruitment.

Generation Z

Gen Z, aged 16 to 28, is entrepreneurial, tech-savvy and full of fresh ideas. They want flexibility, rapid results and work that fits their lifestyle. But they also crave connection and purpose, Henry reminded us that these differences aren’t challenges – but that we should view them as opportunities for growth.

Generational Positioning

Today’s workplace is a mix of Baby Boomers, Gen X, Millennials, and Gen Z. Each group brings its own strengths, but also different expectations. Henry encouraged us to bridge these gaps with open communication and adaptability.

Emerging Markets and Growth

Generational trends shape business opportunities. To attract younger clients and talent, businesses need to showcase their personality online, use social media creatively and make recruitment smooth and human.

Retention and Engagement

Gen Z is known for changing their roles quickly, but Henry shared clever ways to keep them engaged:-

  • Offer training and career progression as a form of currency
  • Build community within the organisation from day one—celebrating new hires, creating rituals and prioritising wellbeing
  • Embrace their entrepreneurial spirit and avoid discouraging the Gen Z love of side hustles

Technology and Communication

Gen Z loves digital platforms, but values quick, clear communication. Henry suggested using conversational language and fast feedback loops to keep them connected.

Future-Proofing

To stay ahead, Henry encourages small businesses to invest in skills for the next decade, offer flexibility and create a culture that feels inclusive and exciting.

Henry also answered questions from members about managing generational friction. With Henry’s advice centring on respecting differences, staying in touch with leavers (many return!) and offering perks that make your business stand out.

This session was a reminder that understanding Gen Z is about unlocking potential and building a vibrant, future-ready business.
