ABG proud to support Demelza

  • ABG proud to support Demelza

Today at ABG we had the privilege of hearing from Loren Regan from Demelza, and I don’t think anyone in the room left unchanged.

Demelza is our local children’s hospice, supporting babies, children and young people with serious or life‑limiting conditions across Kent, South East London and East Sussex. They support the whole family, from the point of diagnosis and for as long as they’re needed – at the hospice, at home and in the community. www.demelza.org.uk

Loren shared the story of Joshua, which many of you have since watched on Demelza’s YouTube channel. Joshua was 12. He loved the water, loved life, and went through more treatment than most adults could imagine. He died just four days before his 13th birthday. What Demelza gave his family was time, space, care and kindness when they needed it most – including the chance to spend precious final days together and create memories that will last forever.

It’s hard to watch. It’s impossible not to feel it.

What really brings this home is understanding what it takes to keep that care going.

Demelza’s work costs around £18.5 million a year to run, covering specialist nurses, care teams, family support, bereavement services, hospice facilities and community care. Around 84% of that funding has to be raised locally, through donations, fundraising and community support – it is not fully funded by the NHS or government. www.demelza.org.uk

That means charities like Demelza rely heavily on people like us – local businesses, business owners and community groups – stepping up.

As a business community, we spend a lot of time talking about growth, success and opportunity. Days like today are a reminder that some families are dealing with things far bigger than any of that. Demelza is there for them at the moments when life is at its toughest, doing work most of us couldn’t begin to do.

ABG is proud to support Demelza.

  • Proud to give them a platform.
  • Proud to raise awareness.
  • And proud to stand behind a charity that quietly does extraordinary work for local families every single day.

Today’s presentation moved the whole group – I’d strongly encourage you to take a few minutes to watch Joshua’s story and learn more about Demelza’s work.
